A&E is the South African subsidiary of US company American & Efird.

The combined turnover of the two companies is around R70-million per year. Acquired as a going concern, the 55 staff members from A&E’s Epping premises will be incorporated with the 86 staff at ACA Threads Brackenfell factory during the course of the year.

Eckhard Marshing, CEO of ACA Threads, says the deal will ensure a world class supply base to satisfy existing and growing needs of retail for strong local manufacturing businesses. There is an increasing trend to look inside of South Africa and its neighbouring countries as the Chinese are starting to retain their goods for their own use, and import prices and logistical challenges attached to importing increase. South Africa is realizing that we need a solid local supply base, and government is supporting the process through its production incentive programs.

The pileup since last week of November is primarily because of upgradation of some computer systems. Although the custom authorities have taken interim steps like manual processing of shipping bills, it is slow and there is congestion of the consignments.

Individual garment exporters, garment associations and freight forwarders have represented to the AEPC that shipments are taking four to five days for clearance. The situation on the import front is taking even longer, said Mr Udani in letters to revenue secretary Sunil Mitra, chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs S.D. Majumder and member customs S.K. Goel.

The Chamber in a Statement said, in the European countries, stand alone accounts of individual holding companies and subsidiaries were continued for Regulatory and Tax purposes and only Consolidated Financial Statements were prepared in accordance with IFRS. This option followed by European Union was accepted as adequate for claiming that European Union has converged with IFRS.

The Chamber further said, the official version of Indian Standards converged to IFRS has already been delayed and, therefore, Mindset to appreciate Fair Value accounting has not been developed in Industry and Investors in view of illiquid markets, volatility of Fair Value, inadeqate skillset on ascertaining Fair Value and doubts regarding unbiased valuation and also there is no clarity on taxation of IFRS based accounts.

“We are pleased that for the first time the Department of Labor’s 2009 Findings on the Worst Forms of Child Labor under the Trade and Development Act contains specific recommendations that countries can use as they work to address the child and forced labor issues within their country,” Burke said. “The other U.S. Department of Labor reports should follow suit and provide as much guidance as possible so countries can work constructively to end child and forced labor in their countries, and provide opportunities to be removed from these lists.”

The Fair Imports Alliance has written to the members of the big retail coalition including Chief Executives and Boards of Directors of the various companies involved asking them to stop their campaign and instead focus on the Productivity Commission Inquiry into the Future of Retail.

Fair Imports Alliance spokesperson Brad Kitschke said the big retailers’ media campaign been an unmitigated disaster.

“It’s a public relations nightmare. We warned them, we asked them not to go ahead with the campaign which actually doesn’t address the issue properly and is narrowly focused.
